I could probably make up a better excuse, but I'm going to share one that actually happened to me.
I was rushing to get ready for work and decided to try these new microwave pizzas I bought. You could also put them in the oven, but of course the microwave is faster. But being so rushed, I read the instructions for the oven instead, and not thinking, put the pizzas in for 10 minutes. Well, my microwave stared to spark and then caught on fire. So I had to open the door and throw baking soda on the flames, unplug it, and throw the still on fire pizzas into the sink. (With my bare hands) And the smoke alarms in the hall of my building go off very easily, and then the fire dept. shows up, and I didn't want to be the jerk responsible for that. So I was freaking out and opening all my windows and ripped the screens out, then grabbed a magazine and ran around trying to move the air out of the apartment. At which time I realized I was already late for work and didn't have time to change my clothes, so I just went in them, hoping the smell wouldn't cling to me. But it did, and all day I smelt like burnt plastic and a combo of perfumes we sold in the store. Which, by default, solidified my story of almost catching my apartment and my hands on fie. And THAT is why I am late, boss.

I was rushing with my daughter (as usual) and she decided that she wasnt wearing the jacket i told her to wear that morning and the tantrum began wasting about 10 minutes of valuable time. So after she got over it and put on the jacket i was officially late. While driving i was thinking to myself, what the hell am i going to say... So i walk into work 10 minutes late and tell them that my daughter was throwing up and i had to clean her up and voila! No problemo!
