Oriental Mix

Living here in Toronto, sometimes I get so wrapped in US Weekly, YBF and theSuperficial that I forget I am Chinese! My mom is from futuristic and affluent island Hong Kong (hello fashion capital!) and my dad is from the arts and culture hub of Shanghai (hello Vegas of China). There is no denying that the influences of Hollywood and BET shape fashion trends and define the street style here in Toronto - but there is a whole entire nation pushing fashion forward - Asia! I found some famous Japanese pop stars by a quick Google search and realize that supercute + sexy = lethal! I am lucky because I am an Asian girl - besides having pin straight hair that just grows and grows and loves being dyed, permed, styled AND being smooth as a peach without much thought - I AM PLAIN. Asian girls have very plain features, innocent looks and therefore very versatile - Our looks that can be transformed by any hair, makeup, clothing, lighting and of course attitude. I would say my style is heavily influenced by Japanese street fashion, hiphop honeys and my imagination.

JJ Magazine is something I treat myself to once in a while - It is the fashion Bible of Japan, like Vogue on estacsy. It is about $33 and is an eternal lookbook - from outrageous to classy, to era inspired, to music inspired, to the 'office-lady' look to harajuku girls... If you want to know what's gonna be popping in Summer 2011, just look at last months JJ magazine.

I always go back to my cultural roots to maximize my style and wardrobe. What influences your style?

Pretty much flawless

I have 2 personalities, glossyvonne and yvonne. One is blonde and fun and the other is a brunette and kinda studious. :) I am yvonne for 2009 until further notice. Biked to Sephora today on Bloor and wanted to find a nice matte flawless foundation to match my new hue, and after playing around for hours, I was debating the new multishade makeupforever liquid foundation or the smashbox high def one. Then the Laura Geller phenomenal foundation one caught my eye! Cool bottle that swivels shut and keeps the foundation fresh, a nice pump system that works well for me - so it's amazing! Pretty, sheer-medium coverage and minimal transfer. "Virtually weightless formula blends beautifully to perfect your complexion. Create a flawless canvas and keep it all day." Laura Geller is famous for it's brow marker and she believes beauty is every woman's birthright.  Amen to that! I will let you know how it compares to my all time favourite maybelline dream matte mousse. Any good recommendations?

The Spirit

I really like going to watch movies with bad reviews - probably because I laugh at parts that nobody else do... let's see what this ones all about!

Loved it, knew i would - eff rotten tomato reviews, i should start my own ketchup reviews haha.. anyway... my favourite line was 'why does it smell so dental'!
Love the over the top dialogue, creative and artistic scenes, the red knife, the femme fatale roles and the eye shadow on Samuel L Jackson

Christmas at Pacific Mall!

The best kept secret for fashion divas in Toronto and surrounding areas is none other of than Pacific Mall. This is probably the only place thats open on Christmas day in the city and it's kind of becoming a tradition for me and my family every year :) Get there early, the parking lot will be full and the people will be a plenty! I can't wait... They call it Hong Kong in Toronto. As some of you know, I am from Hong Kong and moved to Canada at the age of 6. I love how Pacific Mall reminds me of home without the 20 hour flight. Anything you need for your iPhone, BB, dog, cat, boyfriend, mom, dad, bff - Bubble teas, mini egg waffles, sparkly handbags, mini somethings that i don't need and cosmetics from korea, japan and china. wooweee!
Merry Christmas friends!

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I was lucky enough to get prescreening passes from my girl Max last night for Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchette's movie, the Curious Case of Benjamin Button - a movie from a 1922 story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This movie has been nominated for 5 Golden Globes and slew of other awards! Classified as ‎Drama/Scifi/Fantasy/Romance‎ - it has something for everyone. This movie was 2 hours and 45 mins. Overall the story, acting and costume and makeup were superb! Funny parts about the man struck by lightning 7 times provides comedic relief - a beautiful love story with many colorful characters that make you look at life in many different ways and consider time and dimension like never before. If you want this to be your all time favorite movie of 2008, leave at the 2 hour and 30 min mark and imagine your own ending. By the way, Brad Pitt is beautiful, the makeup was fantastic! Remember Cate and Brad in Babel? They have great on screen chemistry... Filmed in Montreal :) (NB: this movie was set against the time frame of the Katrina storm... thoughts?)

The part where he is in Paris, DELICIOUS. The part where he is fixing up the house in the overalls, HOT. The part where he sailing in Florida, tanned and lovely, Irresistible. Wow, Angie is one lucky lady.

In theaters everywhere December 25th.

Check out the main site,

The next movie im dying to see, which was in the previews is the SPIRIT with ScarJo and Eva Mendes!!!! Can't wait :):) Tweet This

Sister Souljah

"So many women wanted him to be real. They knew nothing, absolutely nothing about him, but they were in love with him,"
OH MY EFFING GOD

IM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

buy it here

*update*
So 13 hours later, I emerge a changed person. Sister Souljah first novel The Coldest Winter Ever shook me to the core and shaped a lot of my developing tastes from the age of 16 to 24. Her new book Midnight has once again become one of the most influential books I have read. On so many levels, Sister Souljah has made me examine my own life, my choices, beliefs, values and most important my views on life, love, culture, family and religion. There are just so many things about this book that made me stay up til 3am and then up at 8am to read straight til 3pm. Yes, it's one of those. This book made me want to call those I love, reposition the love prospect, my own life and responsibilities as a woman and fall in love all over again with her writing. I am a changed person because of this book today. A beautiful story of love (parental, filial, platonic, erotic, self, religious, cultural). Sister Souljah frames the story with intensely detailed characters that make the story powerful. Contrasting Akemi, Bangs and Umma show one thing clearly - a strong female is not a victim of her circumstance but sees how to preserver through life. Highly recommend. Tweet This

RUTHIE DAVIS

So this how it all started. I was flipping through some glossy mags and saw this Old Navy ad... and the shoes the model is wearing! Heart!  Anyone know where they are from??? Send me the link and I'll love you forever.

So I decided that finding them will be my new obsession and emailed the ShoeGoddess to find them. She didn't know who they were by but pointed me to miss Ruthie Davis. Shoe designer extraordinaire! NY designed, Italian made, featured in J-pop mags.. Wow, so you can get her shoes on various sites like shopbop and kitson... they run from $500-$800 +. These are perfect for that outrageous fashionista, the star that's meant to shine. You know I won't be buying no conservative beige Manolos or WASPY Jimmy Choos!  ewww, so not my style..
I love my shoes the way I love my men. Read all about that here.
The ones that spell head-to-4inch heel fabulousness. Nosebleed sky high, come fuck me heels.  4 inch heels are so 2008, we are talking 10cm here! Ruthie Davis is my shoe homegirl now... DAVIS is amazing and soon to be a household name, but you heard it here first! I would compare her style to Casadei. You haven't heard of her? That's okay cuz Beyonce has, and Alicia Keys too! Don't sleep on this one...! Check this out.. hot damn!

Major Mascara

I have been so lucky to receive the exclusive sneak preview of the upcoming major mascara launch by L'Oreal Paris (& Matchstick) - The Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara! HeyDoYou is one of 200 Blogs in Canada selected to receive this exclusive L’Oréal Paris Glam Kit containing Double Extension Beauty Tubes Mascara prior to its Canadian debut! Woowee!

(btw, more on BeautyTubes on YouTube)
They will be in all stores Dec 2008.
I love the way it has the base coat and it really extends your lashes. No raccoon eyes and smudges yet and comes off easily with my favorite make up remover, Balms Away. Even though I get most of my makeup from Sephora, there are drug store products that I swear by. My winter makeup routine consists of white mica powder for that snow bunny look, pink blush and very black mascara. For a night time look, I will add a glitter liner and blue mascara to the mix. Perfect!

Another way to emphasis your mega bat bat bats is to frame your eyes. I found my Nicole Richie style over-sized sunglasses a la summer 2007 and popped the lens out to rock the frames for a 2009 plaid attitude look. Hot.

Mascaras I Love;
Benefit BadGAL very black
Givinchy PHENOMEN Black
Tarte Light, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Black
Origins Fringe Benefits Black
GOSH Mascara Amazing Length'n Build Electric Blue
Clinique Volumizing Mascara Black

Winter Puppy

Before you think that 'dogs with shoes' is a ridiculous thing, let me first tell you that my dog also has socks. Winter in the city is no joke for urban dogs who trot down Spadina for their morning walk. They city salt streets can damage and burn paws, cause infections and is a general no-no for all puppies. Some dog owners have used balloons on paws, others have used Muttluks (mitten kind). This is my 3rd winter with Jacob and since he was one Muttluk short of a pair (we lost one of four last winter), we went searching for new ones. Ruffwear boots! They are for dogs on the go! So far so good.

From the website: Bark'n Boots™ Grip Trex™ all-condition, all-terrain, all-season...True to our commitment of designing and producing innovative dog gear that enhances the shared interactive bond between humans and canines, Ruff Wear has revolutionized canine paw wear. Our Bark'n Boots™ Grip Trex™ feature two major advancements in dog boots—an upper inspired by human shoes and a high performance Vibram® sole.

Jacob wears size SMALL. I got them at Dogfather & Co for $67 at Rosedale station ($59 off ruffwear.com). You can get Muttluks for $54 at Timmie's. This is serious stuff, look what I found on CDOA about winter care.... Dry/Cracked Paws: These usually develop because of the rock salt that is found on most sidewalks and driveways in the city, but also due to weather conditions like snow, ice and extreme cold. Go on walks and have fun in the winter! Just stay warm and dry! Tweet This

Virtual French Excellence Week

Sometimes I think the French know something about life that we don't.  French toast, french kiss, french manicures... and then there's more!  Remember the last season when Carrie goes with Petrovsky to Paris but it's nothing but dog poo on Manolos and heartache.  Ouch... Places and things, we always attach fantasy and assumptions about them. Is that a good thing? I guess - but out of my travels, I have this to say - a place is just a place. If you have globe trotted as much as I have, you can attest to what I am saying. The most important thing is where your friends and those you love are.  Don't let geography dictate how you dress, how you think or your ability to fall in love.  There are unstylish people in New York, heart breaks in Paris, lackluster spirits Shanghai and dream crushers in Toronto.  When you know who you are, define your style and live your passion - trust me, somethings do translate!

TNA

Happy bums rejoice everywhere for TNA pants! These magically suplex pants make even the smallest and flattest bums scrumptious. Here I am visitng the first TNA flagship store that opened today at the Toronto Eaton Centre. All in all, it is not all that different than Aritzia. A smaller store located on the first floor (across from Shoppers Drug Mart), it's hard to miss this brightly lit store. A lot of wood theme decor, carvings of cute animals and wooden shelving gives it a cottage cool feel.
God Bless TNA pants is a Facebook group with more than 4000 members! I remember getting my first TNA tracksuit in 2001, a sky blue one! I wore it as much as I could get away with... hahaha... Let's dig up a few old pics. Rocking TNA with my girls at UWO in 03 for our PINK&BLUE party!

TNA booty, you know what I'm talking about!

The changeroom curtains are heavy quilts with a zipper on the side (very DIY). The mirror has a tiny television screen in the bottom right corner! Streaming giraffe clips when I walked by. They have the little lockers with the keys for you to put your bags in when you try on things just like Aritzia. I found that the staff seem friendlier at Aritzia, maybe because the first day TNA staff were stressed out from the massive Christmas shopping crowds! I love the animal and nature motif.

To me, TNA is about fun, artsy, creative, comfort and style. It's also about fun, colours, imagination, music and culture. Look at the TNA BLOG. Super cute and definitely somewhere I would shop. Where else will you find owls on skis?
